Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri) has a long-standing history in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for supporting cognitive function, mental clarity, and reducing stress. Modern research has begun to explore its potential for treating anxiety disorders, but the evidence is still emerging and not yet robust.

Several preclinical studies in animal models demonstrate anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) effects of Brahmi extracts, possibly via modulation of neurotransmitter systems such as serotonin and dopamine. Some small-scale human clinical trials suggest that Brahmi supplementation may help reduce anxiety, particularly in healthy adults or those with mild anxiety symptoms. For instance, a double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in Phytotherapy Research (2013) reported reduced anxiety and improved cognitive performance in healthy volunteers taking Bacopa monnieri extract for 12 weeks. Another systematic review (Journal of Ethnopharmacology, 2014) concluded that while Bacopa shows promise for cognitive enhancement and stress adaptation, the evidence for specific anxiety disorders is still preliminary.

Overall, while there is preclinical and limited clinical evidence suggesting anxiolytic effects of Brahmi, the quality and quantity of research—especially in individuals with diagnosed anxiety disorders—is not sufficient for strong scientific validation. Most studies have small sample sizes, short durations, and often focus on stress or general well-being rather than clinical anxiety disorders. Thus, the use of Brahmi for anxiety is supported by some scientific evidence, but it remains modest and warrants further, larger-scale clinical trials.
