Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Centella asiatica, also known as gotu kola, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where it is believed to promote mental calmness and alleviate symptoms associated with anxiety and stress. Traditionally, it has been used as a tonic for the nervous system and to improve cognitive function, which includes potential anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) effects. Scientific studies investigating the anxiolytic properties of Centella asiatica are limited but suggest some promise. Small-scale animal studies have indicated that extracts of Centella asiatica may reduce anxiety-like behaviors, possibly by modulating neurotransmitter activity or influencing the GABAergic system. Human evidence is more limited; a few small clinical trials and pilot studies report reduced anxiety symptoms following supplementation, but methodological limitations and small sample sizes prevent definitive conclusions. A 2013 review (Wijeweera et al., 2006, and others) notes that while preliminary evidence is encouraging, more rigorous, large-scale human clinical trials are needed to confirm efficacy and clarify mechanisms. Thus, while traditional use is well-documented and there is some emerging scientific support, the current evidence base is not strong or comprehensive enough to fully endorse Centella asiatica as a treatment for anxiety disorders.
