Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Chamomile has a long history of traditional use for promoting relaxation and alleviating symptoms of anxiety. In recent years, a small but growing body of scientific research has begun to examine its efficacy for anxiety disorders. Most studies have focused on Matricaria chamomilla (German chamomile) extract. A notable randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial published in Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology (2009) found that chamomile extract produced a modest reduction in symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) compared to placebo. Subsequent studies, including a 2016 follow-up by the same research group, suggested continued benefit with long-term use, though the effect size was moderate and sample sizes were relatively small. Proposed mechanisms include chamomile’s flavonoids, such as apigenin, which may bind to benzodiazepine receptors in the brain, producing anxiolytic effects. However, systematic reviews and meta-analyses generally conclude that while preliminary results are promising, the overall strength of evidence is limited due to methodological issues, small sample sizes, and short durations of most studies. Thus, chamomile’s use for anxiety is supported by both tradition and some scientific evidence, but more rigorous, large-scale trials are needed to firmly establish its efficacy and safety profile for anxiety disorders.
