Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Convolvulus pluricaulis, commonly known as Shankhpushpi, has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic medicine as a cognitive enhancer and nervine tonic. It is traditionally prescribed to support mental health, including the management of anxiety disorders, stress, and insomnia. Classical Ayurvedic texts describe Shankhpushpi as a "medhya rasayana"—a group of herbs believed to rejuvenate and strengthen the mind. Historically, it has been included in polyherbal formulations aimed at calming the nervous system and alleviating symptoms of anxiety.

Scientific research on Convolvulus pluricaulis is limited but growing. Some preclinical studies in animal models have shown anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) and nootropic (cognitive-enhancing) effects, possibly due to the modulation of neurotransmitters such as GABA and serotonin. However, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking, and most evidence remains anecdotal or based on traditional usage. The pharmacological activity is thought to be related to its alkaloids, flavonoids, and glycosides. Despite promising preliminary data, the current scientific evidence is insufficient to firmly establish its efficacy or safety for treating anxiety disorders by modern clinical standards. Thus, support for its use is grounded primarily in traditional practice, with a modest level of scientific evidence supplementing its historical reputation.
