Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

DHA-conjugated phosphatidylserine (DHA-PS) is a compound combining docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), an omega-3 fatty acid, with phosphatidylserine (PS), a phospholipid found in high concentrations in the brain. Both DHA and PS have been individually investigated for potential benefits in cognitive function and mood regulation. Scientific interest in DHA-PS stems from preclinical evidence suggesting synergistic neuroprotective effects and potential modulation of neurotransmitter systems involved in anxiety.

However, the direct clinical evidence supporting the use of DHA-PS specifically for anxiety disorders is limited. Some animal studies suggest anxiolytic-like effects of PS, and DHA supplementation has been associated with mood improvements in certain populations. A few small human studies have examined phosphatidylserine (sometimes in combination with omega-3s) for stress and mood, showing mild benefits on stress reactivity, but robust, high-quality randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in individuals with diagnosed anxiety disorders are lacking.

In summary, while the biological rationale is plausible and there is preliminary evidence from animal models and small human studies on related compounds, the direct evidence for DHA-PS in treating or supporting anxiety disorders is weak. Larger, well-controlled clinical trials are needed to establish efficacy. Therefore, the scientific evidence rating is 2/5, reflecting only early-stage and indirect support.
