Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Gelsemium, particularly in its homeopathic form Gelsemium sempervirens, has a long tradition of use in homeopathy for anxiety disorders, especially anxiety characterized by anticipatory fears, trembling, weakness, and a sensation of heaviness. Historically, the remedy was introduced into homeopathic practice in the 19th century, and its indications in anxiety have been based largely on clinical observation and homeopathic "provings" rather than controlled clinical trials. Traditional homeopaths have recommended it for symptoms such as performance anxiety, stage fright, and anxiety before exams or public speaking.

There is limited scientific evidence supporting the use of Gelsemium for anxiety disorders. A few small preclinical and animal studies have suggested that extracts of Gelsemium sempervirens may have anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) effects, but the doses used in these studies are much higher than those typically used in homeopathy, where the remedy is highly diluted. Human clinical data are lacking, and systematic reviews generally conclude that there is insufficient evidence to support its efficacy for anxiety in any form. As such, its use is justified primarily by tradition rather than robust scientific validation.

In summary, while Gelsemium is widely used in traditional homeopathic practice for anxiety disorders, the scientific evidence supporting its effectiveness is weak, and its use remains primarily rooted in tradition.
