Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Ginseng has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in East Asia, where it has been employed to address a variety of health concerns, including mental well-being and stress-related symptoms. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) regards ginseng (most commonly Panax ginseng or Panax quinquefolius) as an adaptogen—an agent thought to help the body resist physical, chemical, and biological stressors. In this context, ginseng has been commonly used to "calm the spirit" and promote resilience to emotional disturbances, which may overlap with symptoms of anxiety. However, the traditional use is often generalized to overall vitality and stress, rather than specifically for anxiety disorders as defined by modern clinical criteria. Scientific evidence for ginseng's efficacy in treating anxiety disorders remains limited. A small number of animal studies and preliminary human trials suggest that certain ginsenosides (active compounds in ginseng) may have anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) effects, possibly by modulating neurotransmitter systems such as GABA and serotonin. However, clinical data are sparse, with most studies being small, lacking rigorous controls, or not directly targeting diagnosed anxiety disorders. Therefore, while the traditional rationale for using ginseng in anxiety exists, robust scientific validation is currently lacking, and more high-quality research is needed to determine its true efficacy and safety for anxiety disorders.
