Evidence supporting the use of: Ginkgoside
For the health condition: Anxiety Disorders
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Ginkgoside, the active constituent of Ginkgo biloba extract, has been traditionally used in Chinese medicine for various cognitive and circulatory conditions, but its application for anxiety disorders is based more on traditional use than robust scientific evidence. Historically, Ginkgo biloba has been valued for its purported benefits on memory and mental clarity, which has led to its use for mood and emotional regulation, including symptoms of anxiety. However, clinical studies specifically evaluating the efficacy of ginkgosides or Ginkgo biloba extract in treating anxiety disorders are limited and yield mixed results. Some small trials suggest mild anxiolytic effects, particularly in elderly populations or individuals with cognitive decline, but these findings are not consistent or strong enough to be considered definitive. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses generally conclude that while there may be some benefit, the evidence is insufficient to recommend ginkgoside or Ginkgo biloba as a primary treatment for anxiety disorders. The use of ginkgoside for anxiety remains largely traditional, with scientific validation still lacking substantial support.
