Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Griffonia simplicifolia is a West African plant whose seeds are a natural source of 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), a direct precursor to serotonin. Its use for anxiety disorders is grounded in the biochemical role of serotonin in mood regulation. Several small clinical trials and animal studies have investigated 5-HTP supplementation, including that derived from Griffonia, for mood and anxiety disorders. These studies suggest that 5-HTP may increase central serotonin levels and have anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) effects. However, the evidence is limited and not robust: most clinical studies are small, short-term, and often not specific to anxiety disorders. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses generally conclude that while there is some promise, the quality and quantity of evidence supporting 5-HTP (and thus Griffonia) for anxiety are insufficient for strong recommendations. Safety concerns, such as the risk of serotonin syndrome if combined with other serotonergic agents, also limit widespread use. In summary, Griffonia’s use for anxiety has a scientific rationale and some preliminary evidence, but it lacks large, high-quality clinical trials to firmly support efficacy for anxiety disorders.
