Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Hypericum, most commonly referring to Hypericum perforatum (St. John's Wort), has a longstanding traditional use in herbal medicine for a variety of mood disorders, primarily mild to moderate depression. Its use for anxiety disorders specifically, however, is based more on historical tradition and extrapolation from its antidepressant properties rather than robust scientific validation. Traditional herbalists have used Hypericum preparations to alleviate symptoms such as nervousness, restlessness, and mild anxiety, often as part of broader treatments for melancholia or emotional imbalance. Scientific studies have largely focused on St. John's Wort for depression, with mixed or limited evidence regarding its effectiveness for anxiety disorders. A small number of clinical trials have examined Hypericum’s effects on anxiety, but results are inconclusive and generally do not show significant benefit over placebo for diagnosed anxiety disorders. Systematic reviews and guidelines do not recommend Hypericum as a treatment for anxiety due to insufficient evidence. Therefore, while it is used in traditional medicine for anxiety and related symptoms, there is little high-quality scientific support for its efficacy for this indication.
