Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) has a long history of traditional use in Southeast Asia, where it has been consumed for its stimulant and sedative properties. Traditionally, kratom leaves were chewed or brewed as tea by laborers to combat fatigue, enhance mood, and relieve pain. While not specifically consumed for anxiety disorders in the Western medical sense, anecdotal reports and some traditional practices suggest that kratom may have calming and anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) effects at lower doses due to its interaction with opioid receptors and serotonergic pathways. However, formal scientific validation for kratom’s use in treating anxiety disorders is limited and primarily consists of user reports and small observational studies. These studies indicate that some individuals self-medicate with kratom to manage symptoms of anxiety, stress, and depression. Clinical trials are lacking, and the safety profile is not well established, with concerns over dependence, withdrawal, and other adverse effects. Regulatory bodies such as the FDA do not recognize kratom as a treatment for anxiety or any other medical condition. In summary, kratom’s use for anxiety is rooted more in traditional practice and anecdotal reports than in robust scientific evidence.
