Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Lactium is a patented bioactive decapeptide derived from casein, the primary protein in milk. Its proposed mechanism of action involves binding to gamma-aminobutyric acid type A (GABAA) receptors, producing anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) effects similar to those of benzodiazepines, but without sedative or addictive properties. Several small-scale clinical studies and animal experiments have investigated Lactium’s effects on stress and anxiety. For example, a 2006 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study (Messaoudi et al.) in healthy adults found that those who consumed Lactium reported lower subjective stress scores and reduced salivary cortisol levels compared to placebo. Other studies have suggested benefits for improving sleep quality and mood in subjects experiencing mild-to-moderate stress or anxiety.

Despite these findings, the overall body of evidence remains limited. Most studies involve small sample sizes, short durations, and often include subjects with stress rather than diagnosed anxiety disorders. Meta-analyses and systematic reviews note that while Lactium appears safe and well-tolerated, more rigorous research is needed to establish its efficacy for clinically significant anxiety. Thus, while there is some scientific support for Lactium’s use in stress and mild anxiety, the strength of evidence for treating formal anxiety disorders is weak (rated 2/5), and it should not be considered a substitute for evidence-based treatments. Healthcare providers may recommend it as an adjunct for mild symptoms, but patients should be aware of the current limitations in the scientific literature.
