Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Magnesium taurate is a compound combining magnesium and taurine, both of which have been individually investigated for their potential roles in supporting mental health, including anxiety disorders. Magnesium is an essential mineral involved in neurotransmission and has been studied for its ability to modulate the nervous system. Several studies have found that magnesium deficiency is associated with increased anxiety, and magnesium supplementation has shown modest anxiolytic effects in some human and animal studies. Taurine, an amino acid, also has inhibitory effects on the central nervous system and has been theorized to contribute to calming effects, though direct human studies are limited.

However, specific evidence for the use of magnesium taurate (the combination) for anxiety disorders is limited. Most research focuses on magnesium in general or on other forms like magnesium glycinate or citrate. Few clinical trials have evaluated magnesium taurate specifically for anxiety. Thus, while there is a scientific rationale based on the known effects of magnesium and taurine separately, and limited evidence from small studies or animal models, robust clinical trials are lacking. Consequently, the strength of evidence supporting magnesium taurate for anxiety is weak (rated 2 out of 5). Its use is largely extrapolated from data on magnesium and taurine, not from direct high-quality studies on the compound itself.
