Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Mulungu (Erythrina mulungu) is a medicinal plant traditionally used in South America, especially in Brazil, for its purported calming and sedative properties. Its use for treating anxiety disorders is primarily rooted in folk medicine, where the bark and roots have been prepared as teas or tinctures to alleviate symptoms of anxiety, insomnia, and nervous agitation. Scientific research on Mulungu is limited but growing. Some preclinical studies in animals suggest that extracts of Mulungu may have anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) effects, possibly due to the presence of alkaloids such as erythravine and other related compounds that interact with neurotransmitter systems, particularly GABAergic pathways. However, high-quality human clinical trials are lacking. The bulk of supportive evidence remains anecdotal or based on traditional use rather than robust scientific validation. Thus, while some experimental data provide a plausible mechanism for its effects, current evidence is insufficient to recommend Mulungu as a standard treatment for anxiety disorders. Further rigorous clinical studies are needed to confirm its efficacy and safety in humans.
