Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Panax ginseng has been traditionally used in East Asian medicine for a variety of health concerns, including improving mental performance, reducing fatigue, and supporting general well-being. Its use for anxiety disorders specifically is largely rooted in traditional practices rather than strong scientific evidence. In traditional Chinese medicine, ginseng is thought to help restore balance and vitality, which may indirectly support emotional health.

Scientific research on Panax ginseng’s effectiveness for anxiety disorders is limited and inconsistent. A few animal studies and small human trials suggest possible anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) effects, potentially due to ginsenosides—active compounds in ginseng that may influence the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and neurotransmitter systems. However, the quality and quantity of clinical studies are insufficient to draw firm conclusions. The existing studies often have small sample sizes, short durations, and methodological limitations.

Overall, while Panax ginseng is traditionally used to promote calmness and resilience to stress, robust scientific validation for its use specifically in anxiety disorders is lacking. Therefore, its use for this purpose is primarily justified by tradition, with only modest supporting evidence from preliminary research.
