Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Phenibut is a central nervous system depressant first developed in Russia in the 1960s. It is structurally similar to the neurotransmitter GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) but can cross the blood-brain barrier more effectively. In Russia and some Eastern European countries, Phenibut has been prescribed for the treatment of anxiety, insomnia, and related disorders. A limited number of human studies and clinical experience in these regions support its anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) effects, especially for conditions such as generalized anxiety disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. Anecdotal reports and several small studies suggest that Phenibut may reduce symptoms of anxiety, promote calmness, and improve sleep quality. However, the evidence base is limited, with most data coming from non-English language trials, case reports, and uncontrolled studies. There is a lack of large, high-quality randomized controlled trials in Western medical literature. In addition, Phenibut is not approved for medical use in the United States or most Western countries due to concerns about safety, dependence, and withdrawal. Its use is associated with risks of tolerance, dependence, withdrawal syndrome, and potential for abuse. In summary, while there is some scientific evidence from Russian clinical practice and a few human studies supporting Phenibut’s anxiolytic effects, the quality and quantity of evidence are limited, and safety concerns are significant.
