Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Polygala root, also known as Yuan Zhi or Polygala tenuifolia, is a traditional herb widely used in Chinese medicine. Its primary historical use is to "calm the spirit" and "open the orifices of the heart," which in traditional Chinese medical theory refers to improving mood, memory, and mental clarity. For centuries, it has been included in herbal formulas aimed at addressing symptoms resembling what modern medicine classifies as anxiety, insomnia, and restlessness.

Scientific exploration into Polygala root’s anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) effects is limited but emerging. Preclinical studies (mainly in animal models) have shown that extracts of Polygala tenuifolia may modulate neurotransmitter systems involved in mood regulation, including serotonin, dopamine, and GABA. Some studies report behavioral changes in rodents that suggest reduced anxiety-like responses after administration of Polygala extracts. Additionally, there is evidence of neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory properties, which could be relevant to mood disorders.

However, well-designed clinical trials in humans are lacking, and the evidence does not reach the standards required for mainstream medical endorsement. The majority of support for Polygala root in treating anxiety comes from hundreds of years of traditional use rather than robust scientific validation. Therefore, its use is best described as "traditional" with moderate (rated 2/5) supporting evidence, mainly from historical practice and preliminary animal research.
