Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Pulsatilla, derived from the plant Pulsatilla pratensis (also known as pasqueflower), is primarily used in homeopathy and traditional herbal medicine. Its use to support or treat anxiety disorders is rooted in traditional European and homeopathic practices rather than scientific validation. Historically, Pulsatilla has been indicated for individuals described as gentle, emotional, and prone to weepiness—features that overlap with some presentations of anxiety. In homeopathy, highly diluted Pulsatilla preparations are prescribed based on the principle of "like cures like," although these remedies contain little to no measurable active ingredient.

There is a lack of robust scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of Pulsatilla for anxiety disorders. No high-quality randomized controlled trials or systematic reviews have established its effectiveness for this indication. The available literature consists mainly of case reports and anecdotal accounts within the homeopathic community. Mainstream medical and psychiatric guidelines do not recognize Pulsatilla as a treatment for anxiety disorders. Therefore, while its use persists in traditional and homeopathic settings, the evidence supporting its effectiveness is weak and primarily anecdotal.
