Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Rhodiola crenulata is a species of Rhodiola traditionally used in Tibetan and Chinese medicine, often as an adaptogen to help the body cope with stress. More broadly, extracts from Rhodiola species (particularly Rhodiola rosea and Rhodiola crenulata) have been studied for their potential anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) effects. Several small randomized controlled trials and animal studies have investigated Rhodiola's impact on symptoms of anxiety, stress, and fatigue. Some human studies have found moderate reductions in self-reported anxiety and improvements in stress-response when using standardized extracts of Rhodiola, though most of these studies have methodological limitations, such as small sample sizes, short durations, or lack of clarity on the specific Rhodiola species used.

The active compounds, such as salidroside and rosavin, are thought to modulate neurotransmitter levels (including serotonin and dopamine) and regulate the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. However, most clinical research focuses on R. rosea rather than R. crenulata, and direct high-quality evidence for R. crenulata in treating clinically diagnosed anxiety disorders is limited. Thus, while preliminary scientific evidence suggests some potential benefit, the quality and quantity of data are not strong enough to firmly support its use as a primary treatment for anxiety disorders. Further rigorous, large-scale studies are needed.
