Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Rhodiola rosea, commonly known as Rhodiola, has a long history of use in traditional medicine in Russia and Scandinavia for enhancing resilience to stress and fatigue. More recently, scientific interest has focused on its potential adaptogenic properties, particularly its effects on stress-related and mood disorders, including anxiety. Several small-scale clinical trials and animal studies have evaluated Rhodiola's impact on anxiety symptoms, often in the context of stress or mild anxiety disorders. Some randomized controlled trials have shown modest reductions in self-reported anxiety and stress levels compared to placebo. However, these studies often suffer from methodological limitations such as small sample sizes, short follow-up durations, and inconsistent diagnostic criteria. Meta-analyses and systematic reviews generally conclude that while preliminary results are promising, the quality of evidence is low to moderate, and there is insufficient high-quality data to recommend Rhodiola as a primary treatment for anxiety disorders. Nonetheless, Rhodiola is widely marketed as an herbal supplement for stress and anxiety, and is sometimes used as an adjunct to conventional therapies. Overall, there is some scientific evidence to support its use, but it is not robust, and further large, well-designed studies are needed to clarify Rhodiola’s efficacy and safety for anxiety disorders.
