Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Rosavins are a group of compounds found in the plant Rhodiola rosea, commonly known as golden root or Arctic root. Rhodiola rosea has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems in Russia and Scandinavia, primarily as an adaptogen to help the body resist physical and mental stress. However, the justification for its use in anxiety disorders is increasingly supported by scientific research, though the evidence base remains modest and further research is needed.

Several clinical studies and meta-analyses have evaluated Rhodiola rosea extracts (standardized to contain rosavins) for their effects on stress and anxiety symptoms. Some randomized controlled trials have found that Rhodiola rosea supplementation can reduce symptoms of stress, fatigue, and mild anxiety, likely due to its influence on neurotransmitters such as serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine. For example, a study published in Phytomedicine (2009) showed a reduction in anxiety and stress symptoms in subjects taking Rhodiola extract compared to placebo.

Despite these promising findings, the overall quality of evidence is limited by small sample sizes, short duration, and methodological limitations. Most studies focus on stress or subclinical anxiety rather than diagnosed anxiety disorders. Major guidelines do not currently recommend rosavins or Rhodiola rosea as first-line treatments for anxiety disorders. Therefore, while there is some preliminary scientific support, the evidence is not robust, justifying a moderate-low rating.
