Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Saffranal, a bioactive compound found in saffron (Crocus sativus), has been investigated for its potential anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) effects. Several preclinical studies in animal models suggest that saffranal may exert anxiolytic-like effects, possibly via modulation of GABAergic and serotonergic systems—mechanisms also targeted by conventional anti-anxiety medications. For example, rodent studies have demonstrated that administration of saffranal can reduce anxiety-like behaviors in standardized tests such as the elevated plus maze. Some small clinical trials of saffron extracts (which contain saffranal as one component) have also reported reductions in anxiety symptoms in humans compared to placebo; however, these studies typically assess whole saffron extracts rather than isolated saffranal, making it difficult to attribute effects specifically to this compound. Overall, while there is preliminary scientific evidence—mainly from animal studies and a few human studies involving saffron extracts—supporting the anxiolytic effects of saffranal, the evidence is still limited and not robust enough to warrant strong clinical recommendations. Larger, well-designed clinical trials are needed to clarify its efficacy and safety in treating anxiety disorders.
