Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Shankhpushpi (Convolvulus pluricaulis) has been used traditionally in Ayurvedic medicine as a "Medhya Rasayana," or brain tonic, for centuries. Its use for anxiety disorders is primarily rooted in this traditional context, where it is believed to calm the mind, reduce stress, and enhance cognitive function. Classic Ayurvedic texts describe Shankhpushpi as beneficial for mental health, citing its purported anxiolytic and adaptogenic effects. Modern scientific research on Shankhpushpi's efficacy for treating anxiety in humans is limited. Some animal studies suggest that extracts of this herb may possess anxiolytic and sedative properties, possibly due to its alkaloids, flavonoids, and glycosides, which may modulate neurotransmitter systems involved in anxiety. However, these studies are preliminary, often conducted on rodents, and do not equate to robust clinical evidence in humans. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses are lacking, and there are very few, if any, high-quality randomized controlled trials evaluating Shankhpushpi's effect on anxiety disorders in people. In summary, the use of Shankhpushpi for anxiety is justified mainly by its long-standing traditional use in Ayurveda, with only limited scientific support from preclinical research. Its evidence rating is modest (2/5), reflecting this gap between tradition and high-quality clinical validation.
