Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Shen-chu (also known as Shenqu or Massa Fermentata) is a traditional Chinese medicinal ingredient, typically used as a fermented mass of wheat flour and various herbs. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Shen-chu is primarily employed to aid digestion, harmonize the stomach, and promote the transformation and transportation of food. Its use for anxiety disorders is not a principal or well-established function in classical TCM texts. However, some practitioners may use it as part of broader formulas aimed at addressing symptoms like restlessness or discomfort that are believed, within TCM theory, to be related to digestive disturbances affecting the "Shen" (spirit/mind). Scientific evidence supporting the use of Shen-chu for anxiety disorders is minimal to nonexistent. Most modern research on Shen-chu focuses on its digestive benefits, particularly its enzyme and probiotic content. There are no high-quality clinical trials or systematic reviews validating its efficacy for anxiety or related psychological conditions. Any use of Shen-chu for anxiety is mostly rooted in traditional practice, often as an adjunct within multi-herb formulas rather than as a primary treatment. Therefore, its justification for anxiety rests on traditional theory rather than robust scientific validation, and the evidence rating is low.
