Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Trichilia catigua, commonly known as catuaba, is traditionally used in Brazilian folk medicine as an adaptogen, aphrodisiac, and general tonic. Its use for anxiety disorders is primarily based on traditional and ethnobotanical reports rather than robust scientific validation. Several animal studies indicate that extracts of Trichilia catigua may have anxiolytic-like effects, possibly mediated via dopaminergic or serotonergic pathways. For example, some rodent models have shown reduced anxiety-like behaviors after administration of catuaba extracts. However, these studies are limited in number, often use crude extracts, and lack replication or standardization. No high-quality clinical trials in humans have specifically examined its efficacy for anxiety disorders. Historical usage in South America focuses more on general mood enhancement and fatigue reduction rather than targeted anxiety treatment. Thus, while there is some preclinical support and a strong basis in traditional use, the scientific evidence remains preliminary and insufficient for conclusive recommendations.
