Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Vervain (Verbena officinalis) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in Europe and parts of Asia, where it has been employed for a variety of ailments, including those related to the nervous system such as anxiety, restlessness, and insomnia. Folk herbalists have regarded vervain as a mild sedative or nervine, often recommending it in teas or tinctures for calming effects. However, despite its longstanding traditional use, the scientific evidence to support its effectiveness for anxiety disorders is minimal. A handful of preclinical studies suggest that extracts of vervain may have mild sedative or anxiolytic effects in animals, possibly due to flavonoids and other phytochemicals, but there are no robust clinical trials in humans confirming these effects. Major herbal reference texts typically list vervain as a traditional remedy rather than an evidence-based treatment for anxiety. As such, while vervain is used for anxiety based on tradition, the current scientific evidence remains weak, justifying a low score for evidence (1 out of 5).
