Evidence supporting the use of: Vitamin B6 (not specified)
For the health condition: Anxiety Disorders
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Vitamin B6, also known as pyridoxine, has been investigated for its potential role in supporting mental health, including anxiety disorders. The scientific evidence for its use is limited but not absent. Some small-scale studies and biochemical rationale suggest that Vitamin B6 may contribute to neurotransmitter synthesis (such as serotonin, dopamine, and GABA), which are involved in mood regulation and anxiety. For example, a 2022 randomized controlled trial (RCT) published in Human Psychopharmacology found that high-dose Vitamin B6 supplementation (100 mg/day for one month) significantly reduced self-reported anxiety and stress compared to placebo in young adults. The authors hypothesized this effect was due to enhanced GABAergic activity, as B6 is a cofactor in GABA synthesis. However, these findings have not been widely replicated, and the overall body of evidence is sparse, with most studies being small and short-term.
There is also some evidence that individuals with anxiety may have lower B6 status, but causality and clinical significance remain unclear. Major guidelines do not currently recommend Vitamin B6 as a primary or adjunctive treatment for anxiety disorders. Thus, while there is a plausible mechanism and some preliminary human data, the use of Vitamin B6 for anxiety is not strongly supported and merits a low evidence rating.
