Vitamin B6 (specifically in its active form, pyridoxal 5’-phosphate) has some scientific evidence suggesting a potential role in supporting the treatment of anxiety disorders, but the evidence remains preliminary and limited. Vitamin B6 is a cofactor in the synthesis of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine, and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), all of which are implicated in mood regulation and anxiety. Some small clinical studies have indicated that B6 supplementation may reduce symptoms of anxiety, particularly when used in combination with other B vitamins or magnesium. For example, a 2022 randomized controlled trial (RCT) found that high-dose B6 supplementation (100 mg/day) reduced self-reported anxiety in young adults compared to placebo, though the magnitude of the effect was modest. However, these studies often involve small sample sizes, short durations, and sometimes combine B6 with other nutrients, making it difficult to isolate its specific effects. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses generally conclude that while there is a plausible biological mechanism, the quality and quantity of evidence remain insufficient to recommend B6 as a standalone treatment for anxiety disorders. Thus, while there is scientific interest and some early validation, the current consensus is that Vitamin B6 may be supportive but should not replace established therapies for anxiety.
