Synopsis

Rating (out of 5): 2

Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) has been investigated for its role in supporting mental health, including anxiety disorders. Biochemically, Vitamin B6 is a cofactor in the synthesis of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine, and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), all of which are involved in mood regulation. A small number of clinical studies have explored its potential in reducing anxiety symptoms. For example, a randomized controlled trial published in 2022 found that high-dose Vitamin B6 supplementation (100 mg/day) for one month reduced self-reported anxiety and stress in young adults compared to placebo. However, the effect sizes were modest, and the sample size was limited. Other studies have shown inconclusive or minimal effects, and meta-analyses specifically focused on Vitamin B6 for anxiety are lacking.

Current clinical guidelines do not recommend Vitamin B6 as a primary or adjunctive treatment for anxiety disorders. The available evidence is limited and not robust enough to make definitive conclusions. Most support for using Vitamin B6 in anxiety relates to its general importance in neurotransmitter metabolism rather than consistent, clinically significant outcomes in controlled studies. Thus, while there is a plausible mechanistic basis and some preliminary clinical evidence, the overall strength of evidence is low.
