Arisaema amurense (commonly known as Amur Jack-in-the-pulpit) is a plant that has been used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) under the name "Tian Nan Xing." In TCM, various parts of Arisaema species are employed for their purported properties in resolving phlegm, alleviating convulsions, and reducing swelling. There are historical records indicating that Arisaema species have occasionally been included in multi-herb formulas aimed at treating "abdominal masses" or "toxic swelling," conditions that, in ancient medical terminology, could sometimes overlap with symptoms of appendicitis. However, direct, consistent use of Arisaema amurense specifically for appendicitis (as understood in modern biomedical terms) is not well-documented in classical Chinese medical texts. Modern scientific studies validating its use for appendicitis are lacking, with no clinical trials or pharmacological evidence supporting efficacy or safety for this indication. Therefore, while there is some traditional precedent for using Arisaema in conditions with superficial similarity to appendicitis, the historical evidence is weak and indirect, and there is no robust scientific validation.
