Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3

Chen pi (dried tangerine peel) has been used for centuries in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) primarily to regulate the flow of qi (energy) in the digestive system and to treat symptoms such as poor appetite, bloating, and indigestion. In TCM theory, a "deficient appetite" is often attributed to imbalances such as "Spleen Qi Deficiency" or "Dampness obstructing the Middle Jiao." Chen pi is said to invigorate the Spleen, harmonize the Stomach, and disperse stagnant qi, which, according to tradition, helps stimulate appetite. Historical texts like the "Bencao Gangmu" (Compendium of Materia Medica) and "Shennong Bencao Jing" mention chen pi as a remedy for digestive complaints including reduced appetite.

Modern pharmacological studies suggest that chen pi contains volatile oils, flavonoids (such as hesperidin), and alkaloids, which may have mild prokinetic and digestive-promoting effects. However, most scientific studies are preliminary, conducted in vitro or on animals, and do not directly address appetite in humans. The traditional basis for using chen pi to support appetite remains much stronger than the current scientific evidence. Thus, chen pi's use for deficient appetite is considered justified mainly by tradition, with moderate historical evidence and limited scientific validation. More rigorous clinical trials are needed to confirm its efficacy from a biomedical standpoint.
