In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), rice—particularly white rice or congee (rice porridge)—is considered to have properties that tonify the spleen and stomach, organs seen as central to digestion and appetite. Rice is classified as mild, easily digestible, and nourishing, making it a staple food recommended for those recovering from illness or experiencing reduced appetite. The blandness and gentle nature of rice are thought to help “strengthen Qi” (vital energy) and restore digestive function without overwhelming the system.
However, there is a lack of robust scientific evidence supporting the use of rice specifically as an appetite stimulant. While rice is a major carbohydrate source that provides easy-to-digest calories, studies directly investigating its impact on appetite in cases of deficiency are scarce. Most of its use for appetite comes from centuries of empirical tradition and clinical observation in various cultures, rather than controlled scientific studies.
