Taraxol is a pentacyclic triterpenoid compound found in the roots and aerial parts of Taraxacum officinale (commonly known as dandelion). The use of dandelion in traditional medicine systems, such as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and various European folk practices, has included applications for stimulating appetite, particularly in cases of poor digestion or deficient appetite. The rationale behind this traditional use is largely based on the plant’s reputed ability to act as a bitter tonic, which is believed to promote gastric secretions and thus enhance appetite.
However, while dandelion extracts have a long-standing tradition of use as appetite stimulants, there is limited direct scientific evidence specifically supporting the role of taraxol itself in appetite stimulation. Most studies focus on the general phytochemical profile of dandelion, with some evidence indicating that bitter constituents can increase appetite by stimulating taste receptors and gastric activity.
