Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Garcinia pedunculata, commonly known as 'Bor Thekera' in Northeast India, has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in Ayurveda and indigenous folk practices. Traditionally, it has been used for a variety of digestive ailments, including as an appetite suppressant in cases of excessive appetite. Texts and ethnobotanical surveys from the region document the use of its dried fruit rind in preparations intended to reduce hunger and support weight management. The sour taste and fibrous content are thought to contribute to increased satiety and decreased desire for food.

However, while there are traditional claims regarding its appetite-suppressing effects, robust clinical or preclinical scientific studies directly evaluating its efficacy for this purpose are lacking. Most available scientific research on Garcinia pedunculata has focused on its antioxidant, hepatoprotective, and anti-inflammatory properties rather than its effects on appetite. Thus, the justification for its use in managing excessive appetite is primarily based on traditional knowledge and anecdotal evidence, with limited scientific validation to date.
