Flax lignans, particularly secoisolariciresinol diglucoside (SDG), are phytoestrogens found in flaxseed that have been investigated for their cardiovascular benefits. Several human clinical trials and meta-analyses suggest that flaxseed supplementation can help reduce blood pressure, improve lipid profiles (such as lowering LDL cholesterol), and decrease markers of inflammation, all of which contribute to arterial health. The mechanisms are thought to involve antioxidant effects, modulation of endothelial function, and mild estrogenic activity, which may support the integrity and flexibility of arteries. However, while there is scientific support for the cardiovascular benefits of whole flaxseed, the evidence specifically for isolated flax lignans is less robust. Most studies use whole or ground flaxseed, which contains fiber, alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), and other compounds in addition to lignans. Some smaller studies using flax lignan extracts show beneficial effects on blood pressure and arterial stiffness, but these results are not as consistent or as well-established as those for whole flaxseed. Overall, there is moderate scientific evidence (level 3) that flax lignans can support arterial health, but more high-quality research is needed to confirm the efficacy of lignan isolates apart from whole flaxseed preparations.
