Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) has a long history of use in traditional medicine, and in recent years, scientific studies have begun to explore its potential cardiovascular benefits, including effects on the arteries. Some research suggests that ginger may help support arterial health by exerting anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, reducing blood lipid levels, and improving blood circulation. For example, animal and small-scale human studies have observed that ginger can lower blood pressure and decrease cholesterol and triglyceride levels, which are risk factors for atherosclerosis (hardening and narrowing of the arteries). Additionally, ginger contains compounds like gingerols and shogaols, which may help inhibit platelet aggregation, thus reducing the risk of arterial blockages.

However, while these effects are promising, the overall quality and quantity of clinical evidence remain moderate. Most studies are small, of short duration, or use varying doses and preparations of ginger, making it difficult to draw definitive conclusions. Systematic reviews indicate that ginger may have a modest beneficial effect on some cardiovascular risk factors, but more large-scale, well-designed human studies are needed to confirm its direct impact on arterial health. In summary, there is some scientific basis for the use of ginger to support the arteries, but the evidence is not yet strong or conclusive.
