Green tea (Camellia sinensis) has been extensively studied for its cardiovascular benefits, particularly its effects on arterial health. The primary bioactive compounds in green tea are catechins, especially epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). Numerous epidemiological studies and randomized controlled trials suggest that regular consumption of green tea is associated with improved arterial function and reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Clinical trials have shown that green tea consumption can improve endothelial function, which is a key factor in maintaining arterial health. Endothelial dysfunction is an early marker of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. The catechins in green tea have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and lipid-lowering properties. These mechanisms help reduce oxidative stress, inhibit LDL cholesterol oxidation, and decrease inflammatory markers, all of which contribute to healthier arteries.

A 2011 meta-analysis in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that green tea significantly reduced total and LDL cholesterol levels. Other studies, such as those published in JAMA and Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology, have reported reduced risk of coronary artery disease and lower blood pressure among habitual green tea drinkers.

Overall, the scientific evidence supports the use of green tea for promoting arterial health, though it should be seen as part of an overall healthy lifestyle rather than a sole intervention.
