Evidence supporting the use of: Maqui
For the body system: Arteries
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Maqui (Aristotelia chilensis) is a berry native to South America, particularly Chile and Argentina, and is recognized for its high content of anthocyanins and polyphenols. Scientific interest in maqui has focused on its potent antioxidant properties, which are relevant to cardiovascular (arterial) health. Some studies have demonstrated that maqui berry extract can reduce oxidative stress and inflammation—factors that contribute to atherosclerosis and endothelial dysfunction, both of which impair arterial health.
Clinical research is limited but promising. A small randomized, placebo-controlled trial published in 2016 found that daily supplementation with standardized maqui berry extract improved endothelial function (measured by flow-mediated dilation) in healthy smokers. Other in vitro and animal studies suggest that the polyphenols in maqui may help modulate blood pressure and reduce markers of vascular inflammation. However, robust clinical evidence in humans, especially large-scale trials, is still lacking. There is little direct evidence linking maqui to significant improvements in arterial health outcomes such as reduced risk of heart attack or stroke.
In summary, while traditional use of maqui focused more on its general health-promoting and anti-inflammatory effects rather than specifically on arteries, preliminary scientific studies offer some justification for its supportive role in arterial health. The evidence base is still developing, so current support is moderate but not definitive.
