Evidence supporting the use of: Mineral Water
For the body system: Arteries
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Mineral water, particularly varieties rich in minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and potassium, has some scientific support for positive effects on cardiovascular health, including arteries. Several studies have suggested that regular consumption of mineral water may help maintain healthy blood pressure levels, largely due to its magnesium and calcium content. Magnesium plays a vital role in vascular tone and endothelial function, while calcium is involved in vascular contraction and dilation. A small number of clinical trials and observational studies have indicated that consuming mineral water with higher mineral content can modestly reduce blood pressure in individuals with mild hypertension. For example, a study published in the "Journal of Hypertension" (2004) found that mineral water rich in calcium and magnesium was associated with improved arterial function compared to low-mineral water. However, the overall body of evidence is limited, and most research points to a modest effect rather than a strong protective role. There is little evidence that mineral water alone can significantly support or repair arterial health, but as part of an overall healthy diet, it may contribute beneficial minerals that help maintain normal vascular function. Thus, while some scientific evidence exists, it is not robust, and mineral water should not be relied upon as a primary intervention for arterial health.
