Monounsaturated fats (MUFAs) are widely recognized for their beneficial effects on cardiovascular health, including the support of arterial function. Multiple large-scale epidemiological studies and clinical trials have demonstrated that diets high in monounsaturated fats—such as the Mediterranean diet, which features olive oil as a primary fat source—are associated with reduced risk of coronary artery disease. MUFAs have been shown to lower LDL (“bad”) cholesterol levels while maintaining or increasing HDL (“good”) cholesterol, contributing to improved lipid profiles. Additionally, there is evidence that MUFAs can reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, both of which are implicated in the development of atherosclerosis (the hardening and narrowing of arteries).

The American Heart Association and similar organizations recommend replacing saturated fats with monounsaturated fats to support arterial health. Notably, the PREDIMED trial (2013) found that individuals on a Mediterranean diet enriched with extra-virgin olive oil had significantly fewer major cardiovascular events compared to those on a low-fat diet. However, while the evidence is robust for cardiovascular risk reduction, it is less direct for structural changes in arteries themselves. Still, the overall scientific consensus strongly supports the inclusion of monounsaturated fats as part of a heart-healthy diet to promote arterial health.
