Oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs) are polyphenolic compounds found in various plants, notably grape seeds, pine bark, and certain fruits. Their use to support the arteries and overall cardiovascular system is primarily supported by scientific research, though most studies are preclinical or small-scale clinical trials. OPCs are potent antioxidants, and oxidative stress is known to contribute to arterial damage and atherosclerosis. Several studies indicate that OPCs can enhance endothelial function by increasing nitric oxide availability, leading to improved vasodilation and blood flow. Additionally, OPCs have demonstrated the ability to reduce LDL oxidation, a key process in the formation of arterial plaques. Meta-analyses and systematic reviews suggest that OPC supplementation can lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure modestly in people with hypertension. Some studies also report improvements in markers of vascular elasticity and reductions in peripheral edema, especially in individuals with chronic venous insufficiency. However, while these findings are promising, large-scale, long-term clinical trials are lacking, and results are sometimes inconsistent depending on the source and preparation of OPCs. In summary, there is moderate scientific evidence that oligomeric proanthocyanidins support arterial health, primarily through antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and vasodilatory mechanisms. However, more robust clinical trials are needed to confirm these effects and to determine optimal dosing and safety for long-term use.
