Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Procyanidins are a class of polyphenolic compounds found in various plants, particularly in grape seeds, cocoa, apples, and pine bark. Their use to support the arteries and overall cardiovascular health is backed by a moderate amount of scientific evidence, primarily from in vitro studies, animal models, and a growing number of human clinical trials. Procyanidins exhibit strong antioxidant properties, which help protect endothelial cells (the cells lining the arteries) from oxidative stress—a key contributor to atherosclerosis and arterial dysfunction. Additionally, some studies have shown that procyanidins can improve endothelial function by enhancing nitric oxide production, which relaxes blood vessels and supports healthy blood flow. Meta-analyses and clinical trials, especially those using grape seed extract (a rich source of procyanidins), have reported modest reductions in blood pressure and improvements in vascular elasticity. However, results are not entirely consistent, and the quality of evidence varies depending on the preparation and dosage used. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has not authorized health claims for procyanidins specifically for arterial health due to insufficient conclusive evidence, but research remains ongoing. Overall, while there is no strong consensus or regulatory endorsement, the use of procyanidins to support arterial health is justified by a moderate level of scientific validation—mainly based on their antioxidant and vasodilatory effects.
