Purple tea (Camellia sinensis var. assamica 'TRFK 306') is a relatively new cultivar of tea developed in Kenya, notable for its high levels of anthocyanins—antioxidant compounds also found in blueberries and red cabbage. There is emerging scientific interest in purple tea's health benefits, including its potential support for cardiovascular and arterial health. Laboratory studies and preliminary clinical trials indicate that the polyphenols, catechins, and anthocyanins present in purple tea can exert antioxidant effects, reduce oxidative stress, and improve endothelial (arterial lining) function. For instance, a small human study published in 2017 demonstrated that purple tea extract consumption led to reductions in cholesterol and improved lipid profiles, both of which are relevant to arterial health.
However, these findings are early-stage and based on limited sample sizes and short durations. Most research has been conducted in vitro or in animal models, with only a handful of human studies available. While the evidence is promising, it is not robust or comprehensive enough to draw strong conclusions about the efficacy of purple tea specifically for arterial support. There is also little to no historical or traditional use specifically linking purple tea to arterial health, as the cultivar itself is only a few decades old.
In summary, purple tea shows some scientific promise for supporting arterial health due to its unique antioxidant profile, but the evidence is still limited and rates as modest (2/5) at this time.
