Sulforaphane is a naturally occurring isothiocyanate found in cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and cabbage. Its use to support arterial and cardiovascular health is primarily justified by scientific research, particularly in preclinical and some early human studies. Sulforaphane has been shown to activate the Nrf2 pathway, which upregulates the expression of antioxidant and cytoprotective genes. This activation can reduce oxidative stress and inflammation—both of which are key contributors to endothelial dysfunction and atherosclerosis, common precursors to arterial disease.
Several animal studies and cell culture experiments have demonstrated that sulforaphane can reduce vascular inflammation, inhibit the adhesion of monocytes to the endothelium, and decrease the formation of atherosclerotic lesions. For example, studies have shown that sulforaphane supplementation improves endothelial function and reduces markers of oxidative damage in animal models.
Human evidence, while more limited, is emerging. Small clinical trials have reported improvements in markers of vascular health, such as reduced blood pressure and improved endothelial function, after consumption of sulforaphane-rich foods or extracts. However, larger and more rigorous clinical trials are needed to firmly establish its benefits for arterial health in humans.
In summary, there is a moderate and growing body of scientific evidence supporting the use of sulforaphane for arterial health, though the current evidence is stronger in preclinical models than in large-scale human studies.
