Vitamin C (calcium ascorbate) is a well-known antioxidant and plays a crucial role in collagen synthesis, which is vital for maintaining the structural integrity of blood vessels, including arteries. Scientific studies have shown that vitamin C deficiency can lead to weakened blood vessel walls and, in severe cases, scurvy, which is characterized by bleeding and poor wound healing due to impaired collagen formation. Several observational studies suggest that higher vitamin C intake is associated with improved endothelial function (the inner lining of arteries) and lower risk of cardiovascular diseases. Additionally, vitamin C's antioxidant properties help reduce oxidative stress, which is a contributing factor to atherosclerosis (hardening and narrowing of the arteries).
However, while laboratory and some clinical studies support a beneficial role for vitamin C in arterial health, large-scale randomized controlled trials in the general population have not consistently demonstrated that vitamin C supplementation alone significantly reduces the risk of major cardiovascular events such as heart attacks or strokes. Most evidence supports its role in maintaining normal arterial structure and function, especially in cases of deficiency, but routine supplementation for cardiovascular protection in healthy individuals is still debated.
