Evidence supporting the use of: Vitamin E (natural tocopherols)
For the body system: Arteries
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Vitamin E, particularly in the form of natural tocopherols, has been studied for its potential role in supporting arterial and overall cardiovascular health. Vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant that helps protect cell membranes, including those of blood vessels, from oxidative damage caused by free radicals. This property has led to the hypothesis that Vitamin E supplementation could reduce atherosclerosis (the buildup of plaque in arteries) and improve arterial health.
Some observational studies have suggested that higher dietary intake of Vitamin E is associated with a lower risk of coronary artery disease. However, large randomized controlled trials (RCTs) such as the HOPE and ATBC studies have not shown a significant benefit of Vitamin E supplementation in preventing heart attacks, strokes, or mortality from cardiovascular causes in the general population. In some cases, high-dose supplementation was even associated with increased risk of hemorrhagic stroke.
In summary, while there is a biological rationale and some epidemiological support for Vitamin E’s beneficial effects on arteries, robust clinical trial evidence does not strongly support supplementation for arterial health in most people. Its use is therefore justified by scientific reasoning and limited evidence (rated 2/5), but not by strong clinical outcomes. Dietary sources of Vitamin E remain important for overall health, but supplementation specifically for arteries is not broadly validated.
