Vitamin E (tocopherol, not specified) has been the subject of significant scientific research regarding cardiovascular health, including its potential to support arteries. Vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant, and its biological role includes protecting cell membranes from oxidative damage. Since oxidative modification of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol is thought to contribute to atherosclerosis (the buildup of plaques in arteries), it was hypothesized that Vitamin E supplementation might reduce arterial damage and cardiovascular risk.
However, large clinical trials and meta-analyses have produced mixed or negative results regarding the effectiveness of Vitamin E supplements in preventing or treating cardiovascular disease. Studies such as the HOPE and the Women’s Health Study found no significant reduction in major cardiovascular events with Vitamin E supplementation in the general population. Some observational studies initially suggested benefit, but these were not confirmed in randomized controlled trials. There is also some evidence suggesting potential harm at high doses, such as increased risk of hemorrhagic stroke.
In summary, while the rationale for using Vitamin E to support artery health is grounded in biological plausibility and early observational studies, high-quality clinical evidence does not consistently support its supplementation for this purpose in the general public. Therefore, the scientific evidence is limited (rated 2/5), and major health organizations do not currently recommend Vitamin E supplements specifically for cardiovascular or arterial health.
