Hesperetin is a flavonoid primarily found in citrus fruits. It has been investigated for its potential cardiovascular benefits, including its possible effect on arteriosclerosis (the thickening and hardening of arterial walls). Several preclinical studies (mostly in vitro and in animal models) have demonstrated that hesperetin exhibits antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and lipid-lowering properties. These effects are relevant because oxidative stress, inflammation, and dyslipidemia are key factors in the development and progression of arteriosclerosis.

Some animal studies have shown that hesperetin supplementation can reduce the formation of atherosclerotic plaques, improve endothelial function, and decrease serum cholesterol levels. The proposed mechanisms include inhibition of LDL oxidation, downregulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines, and enhancement of nitric oxide bioavailability. However, evidence from human clinical trials is limited. Most studies in humans have focused on hesperidin (the glycoside form of hesperetin) or citrus flavonoid mixtures, with mixed results regarding improvements in vascular function or lipid profiles.

In summary, while there is promising preclinical evidence suggesting that hesperetin may help prevent or slow arteriosclerosis through multiple mechanisms, robust clinical evidence in humans is lacking. Therefore, the scientific evidence supporting its use for arteriosclerosis is currently limited and preliminary.
