For the health condition: Arteriosclerosis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Jiaogulan (Gynostemma pentaphyllum) is an herb traditionally used in Chinese medicine for promoting longevity and cardiovascular health. In recent years, some scientific studies have investigated its potential benefits for arteriosclerosis (the thickening and hardening of arterial walls). The primary bioactive components of jiaogulan are gypenosides, which are thought to exert antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and lipid-lowering effects. Animal studies suggest that jiaogulan extract may reduce serum cholesterol and triglycerides, inhibit the progression of atherosclerotic plaque, and improve endothelial function. For example, research published in Atherosclerosis (2008) demonstrated that gypenosides could attenuate atherosclerotic lesion development in hyperlipidemic rabbits, possibly by modulating lipid metabolism and reducing oxidative stress.
However, while these preclinical results are promising, high-quality human clinical trials are limited. A small number of studies in humans have shown improvements in lipid profiles and markers of vascular health, but these studies often involve small sample sizes, short durations, and methodological limitations. As a result, the overall level of scientific evidence is modest, and jiaogulan cannot be considered a proven treatment for arteriosclerosis at this time. Nevertheless, its historical use for cardiovascular health and emerging scientific data justify ongoing research into its potential as an adjunctive therapy.
