Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Bee products, such as honey and propolis, have a long history of traditional use in the treatment of various skin conditions, including Athlete's Foot (tinea pedis). In folk medicine, both honey and propolis have been applied topically due to their reputed antimicrobial and wound-healing properties. Some laboratory studies have demonstrated that propolis exhibits antifungal activity against dermatophytes, including Trichophyton species, which are common causative agents of Athlete's Foot. For example, in vitro studies indicate that propolis extracts can inhibit the growth of certain fungi. There is also anecdotal and case-based evidence for the use of honey as a topical agent for skin infections, owing to its osmotic effect and natural hydrogen peroxide content.

However, robust clinical trials evaluating the efficacy of bee products specifically for Athlete's Foot are lacking. The majority of evidence is either in vitro or based on traditional use, and there is no consensus or standardization regarding preparation, dosage, or duration of treatment. Therefore, while bee products are used in some traditional systems to support or treat Athlete's Foot, the scientific basis remains limited and preliminary. Further research, especially well-designed clinical trials, is needed to clarify their effectiveness and safety for this indication.
